Past and present members of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club are being asked to dig into their rucksacks for any hidden memories.

To help celebrate the tramping club's 30th anniversary, immediate-past president Judy Knox is compiling a booklet of its history.

''Anyone with old photographs or stories to tell from the early times, we are very keen to hear from them for the booklet we are putting together.''

The club was still going strong and had about 70 members, Mrs Knox said. Membership was split between trampers and hikers, with each group meeting regularly for trips.

The club was officially formed on March 4, 1988 as a way for people over 50 to keep active in a social setting. The social aspect of the club remained, with the hikers and trampers groups coming together on the first Wednesday of each month, Mrs Knox said.

''Every Wednesday, rain or shine, someone always turns up.''

Both the Department of Conservation and the Dunedin City Council maintained many good tracks in and around Dunedin so the club seldom had to venture outside the area, she said.
