The life of a much-loved teacher was celebrated in Dunedin last night with an art auction.

The Stan Turner Memorial Art Auction was held at the University of Otago Language Centre and Foundation Year in the University Plaza Building. The auction’s organiser, university senior student support officer Angela Spears, said the biennial auction celebrated the life of physics teacher and artist Stan Turner, who died after an accident in Macandrew Bay in 2010.

"He was a much-loved teacher in our foundation year programme who was also passionate about art.

"He encouraged students to engage in extracurricular art workshops, as a way to express themselves and achieve a study-lifestyle balance."

Ms Spears, of Dunedin, said staff and students from the language centre and foundation year gave 53 artworks to be auctioned to raise money to donate to the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Anne Turner, who is the wife of Mr Turner and teaches English language at the centre, said she was pleased to see about 100 people at the auction.

Mrs Turner gave four photographic works to be auctioned.

The photos were of sunsets taken after her husband died.

"After Stan died, I took a sunset every night for a year. I like photography and it was something that kept me going."
