Mosgiel assault victim bar patron

The victim of a Mosgiel street-bashing was a patron at Crofters Pub and Liquor Centre before he was assaulted later in the evening, police say.

Senior Sergeant Alastair Dickie, of Mosgiel, said information about the incident was still "pretty vague'' but he believed the 45-year-old victim was in the bar before the beating.

He could not confirm whether the four men who allegedly bashed him were there, too, or whether words were exchanged beforehand.

Police had new information related to the people involved, Snr Sgt Dickie said.

"We have received some other information that may have involved the same offenders that wasn't previously reported to police.''

He could not go into more detail.

The victim was walking in Severn St just after midnight on Thursday, when he was approached by the men and beaten unconscious.

The man suffered "quite extensive facial injuries'' as well as other head injuries and injuries to his body.

•A woman in her 20s spent a night in Dunedin Hospital after she was hit in the head with a baseball bat inside her home on Saturday.

Senior Sergeant Shona Low, of Dunedin, said two or three people entered the Craigleith St address and assaulted a person with a bat, inflicting head injuries.

The people were known to the victim and the assault was not gang-related, Snr Sgt Low said.

No arrests had been made but police were following positive lines of inquiry, she said.

A police media spokesman was unable to answer follow-up questions by the Otago Daily Times yesterday including the exact number of people that entered the property, whether they were locals or their ages and genders.

A question about public safety also went unanswered.

"The investigation is ongoing and police are not in a position to comment further or provide additional information at this time,'' the spokesman said.

•Female residents of a Queen St, Dunedin, flat were spooked by a person tampering with a window about 4am on Saturday, Snr Sgt Low said.

"When the occupant has made a noise, they have run off,'' she said.

"It's a bit of a concern with the females in the flat.''
