Taieri community leaders have paid tribute to Mosgiel identity and restaurateur Blackie Catlow, who died at his home after a ``cardiac event'' at the weekend.

Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board chairwoman Sarah Nitis praised Mr Catlow's contribution to the community, including his running of the former Mosgiel Station Function Centre for the past 16 years.

Former board chairman Bill Feather, who served on the board with him, said Mr Catlow (64) had added positively ``to the community fabric''.

Running the function centre at the historic railway station had helped to safeguard the building and had provided a valuable venue for sizeable functions, he said.

Mr Catlow had told the Otago Daily Times he faced the prospect of a big increase in rental charges from KiwiRail, and he moved out of the station, starting to run Weavers Restaurant in Factory Rd early this year.

One of his daughters, Tina Catlow, said her father was a ``people person'' and Weavers would continue to operate, with her becoming manager.

Weavers would be closed for much of Thursday, but would be open between noon and 3pm to enable people to pay informal tributes.

An obituary will follow.
