Shedding clothes could not quite help University of Otago students Peter Ralph (19) and Nadine Amsler (17), both of the Bay of Islands, to the top spot in the K-Mart Trolley Race in Dunedin's Castle St on Saturday.

While other retailers have put locking devices on their trollies to stop them being wheeled into and abandoned in the student area, the department store brought trollies to Castle St for the third annual race.

Twenty competitors took part, with final-year science student Callum Smith (20), of Nelson, and physical education student Ash O'Donnell (19), of Hawkes Bay, emerging the winners, taking home a barbecue and outdoor furniture.

The "Sleek and Streamline" team of environmental science student Mr Ralph and commerce student Ms Amsler was a close second.
