The National Surf champs kicked off in brisk conditions at St Clair today.
The promenade had a real buzz as competitors and support crews arrived in force to find out who can handle the local conditions which were looking good with left to right swells between one to two metres.
Competing in heat one was Christchurch surfer, David Watkins who managed 3rd place. "Some work to do" as David put it.
Competiton continues through to Sunday.
