Otago Settlers Museum organisers are today launching a competition which invites the public to provide ideas for a new name for the museum.
This contest, which closes on May 23, involves suggesting not only a name for the museum but also offering an explanation of up to 50 words about why it has been chosen.
The winner will gain a family trip to Te Papa in Wellington, including flights, a guided tour, and accommodation.
[comment caption=What should the museum's new name be?]The Otago Settlers Museum complex has been largely closed to the public since last year as its $39 million redevelopment project has continued.
The redeveloped museum will reopen late this year.
"I'd like some exciting names," museum director Linda Wigley said yesterday.
Some overseas visitors to Dunedin were confused by the similarity between the museum's name and that of the Otago Museum, she said.
Ms Wigley said many museums had renamed themselves effectively; in some cases by dropping the word "museum" from their title - and better conveying the breadth of their collections and interests to a wider audience.
The redeveloped former Bristol Transport Museum had become M Shed, the former Dominion Museum had become Te Papa and the former National Maritime Museum had become Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum.
