Asplundh foreman David Barrett (left) and site supervisor Ben Hohaia grind a stump in the lower Octagon last night.
Contract supervisor Nick Houghton said contractors ground two stumps of 130-year-old plane trees, which were felled earlier this year for safety reasons, after the trees were found to be affected by root damage and a fungal disease.
Grass would be established in the areas, he said.
