An expert who cast his eye over Dunedin's coastal erosion hotspots yesterday believes the problem is under control.
Tonkin and Taylor director and coastal engineer Richard Reinen-Hamill, who walked the beach from St Kilda surf club to St Clair, said erosion damage from last month's storms was not ''anywhere near as significant'' as that from storms in 2007.
Following the 2007 storms the Dunedin City Council had commissioned a report into coastal erosion. That report, delivered in 2011, recommended three stages of action: a ''holding pattern'', followed by further barrier construction, followed by a managed retreat around the Kettle Park area.
Mr Reinen-Hamill told the Otago Daily Times yesterday that three-step plan was still appropriate, and that erosionin the area could still be managed within ''existing council consents''.
Exactly what shape his recommendations would take would be delivered as a ''memo'' to council next week, he said.
DCC parks, recreation and aquatics group manager Richard Saunders said the council would consider that advice and review its options before discussing those options with the community.
Action would follow those community discussions, he said.
''We're confident after today that there's no immediate risk and we can manage it. Once we know what action is needed we'll do that.''
