Officer set to take up community role

A new community constable for Mosgiel has been selected and is expected to start work within weeks.

Senior Constable Karren Bye has been recommended for the position following a police selection process.

Sergeant Kevin Davidson, of Mosgiel, said seven applicants applied for the position, which had been vacant since the retirement of former community constable Jacqui Ballam in December.

''The applicants were all of a high quality,'' Sgt Davidson said.

Police appointments undergo an appeal process, which could take about a fortnight before confirmation.

''We are confident she will be ensconced in that position very shortly.''

Snr Const Bye had previously worked as a community constable in South Dunedin, worked in the strategic traffic unit, and had been relieving as the prison liaison officer based in Mosgiel, Sgt Davidson said.

She also lived in the Mosgiel area, and ''has a strong community focus and will be very good in the job''.
