Otago midwives today joined a nationwide protest calling for a new funding model.
In Wellington around 200 midwives marched on Parliament, and there were sizeable gatherings of their colleagues across the south.
Dunedin midwives held a colourful gathering outside Otago Museum.
Spokeswoman Emma Medeiros said midwives were obliged to be on call 24/7, and they felt their pay rates did not reflect that.
"We have petitioned for many years to have our pay reviewed, which hasn't happened: it hasn't changed since 2007,'' Ms Medeiros said.
Meanwhile, four independent midwives in Queenstown have quit their profession, and at least two more are threatening to leave if the Ministry of Health won’t increase their pay, Channel 39 reports.
About 100 people including midwives, mums and their babies marched in the resort today demanding pay equity and better working conditions.
Midwives and supporters also rallied in Wanaka, Balclutha and Oamaru.
