A large set of keys found in Highgate last week has left Dunedin police trying to unlock the mystery as to who owns them.

Inspector Amelia Steel, of Dunedin, said the keys were on a large climbing carabiner with coloured tags, and police were concerned they may belong to an institution or complex, such as a school, hospital or rest-home.

''We thought someone would have come in now, looking for them. Someone must be missing them.''

Police inquiries aimed at finding the owners have so far had no success.

She said the keys were found by a member of the public, who handed them in to the Dunedin Central Police Station.

If anyone recognised them, they were encouraged to contact the Dunedin Central Police Station on 471-4800. john.lewis@odt.co.nz
