Peninsula cycleway delays

Work on the latest two sections of the $35.5 million Otago Peninsula cycleway has slipped more than one month behind schedule.

However, Dunedin City Council staff say they are "comfortable" with progress and expect both sections to be finished within weeks.

Council projects engineer Evan Matheson said the $1 million section of road-widening, cycleway and seawall work in Portobello Rd, near the Vauxhall Yacht Club, had been due for completion by July 1.

So, too, had work on another $2.6 million section of Portobello Rd at the Glenfalloch Gardens, between Macandrew Bay and Rosehill Rd, he said.

The Glenfalloch section was all but finished, with only road markings and some plantings required, and was due to be completed within days.

Work to finish the Vauxhall section would take longer, and was now expected to be finished by early next month.

The Glenfalloch section had been delayed by a combination of bad weather and resource consent delays for an altered design for the work, he said.

Consent conditions had been altered to allow extra reclamation outside Glenfalloch, providing more space and parking for vehicles, with the $200,000 in extra costs paid for by the Otago Peninsula Trust, which ran the garden.

Vauxhall work had been delayed by slower-than-expected work and delays with trenching needed for new street lighting along the route, he said.

Neither delay would add significant costs to the council's share of the project - which also attracted New Zealand Transport Agency subsidies - except for extra traffic management costs of about $10,000, Mr Matheson said.

The contractor was expected to meet additional costs associated with any overrun unless delays were caused by the council, he said.
