The Otago Peninsula Trust wants to bring the love of fluffy birds and historic forts to the people more easily, as it develops a physical presence in the city for the first time in its 50-year history.

This week the trust opened the doors to its new "info zone" on the ground floor of the Allied Press building on Stuart St.

During the week people will be able to buy tours and merchandise there and get general information about its ventures.

The office is the new home of the trust’s archives which hold boxes of documents from throughout its history. There are first-hand written accounts of World War 2 through its research of Fort Taiaroa, and early pictures and documents from the albatross colony.

Trust marketing manager Sophie Barker said the archives could be viewed by appointment.

Having a presence in the city itself had "long been on the agenda" for the trust, she said.

"We wanted to open an office here to make people fall in love with the Otago Peninsula".

The 50-year anniversary of the trust was a "perfect time" to do so, she said.

The trust is involved with the Royal Albatross Centre, Pukekura Blue Penguins, Glenfalloch’s gardens and restaurant and Fletcher House.
