'Please slow down': Speeders nabbed on Northern Motorway

A handful of drivers have been given an early "Christmas present" in  the form of a warning from police about their speeding on Dunedin’s Northern Motorway.

However, about a dozen drivers were not so lucky and received major fines for speeding because they were so far over the limit.

Senior Constable Steve Griffiths said a number of speeding offences were detected in the last few days and it was disappointing leading up to Christmas.

One driver was caught travelling about 130kmh near where an Oamaru man died in a car accident on Monday, he said.

"Obviously, the message is not getting out there.

"Please slow down. Speeding won’t make that much difference on the time your trip takes."

Whether drivers received tickets or warnings, both could be considered Christmas gifts, he said.

"Santa has given these people an early present to remind them that we want them home safely."

He said police would be out in force during the summer break and reminded drivers to keep to the speed limit.

"Santa has given these people an early present to remind them that we want them home safely." err no, incorrect, it was the police that gave them the "early present", trying to blame a fictional character is being disingenuous.

They've been told.

They've been told what?, that Santa exists?.

Saw some really crap driving on SH1 going to Balclutha today. An idiot in a bronze coloured Land Cruiser nearly caused a bad pile up at the end of a passing lane because he was impatient and incompetent and the white RAV4 he pushed in front of then tried to catch him up. Daft overtaking got them exactly 2 cars in front by the time we reached the Clutha bridge. What morons. I have the video if anyone wants it!
