Police say rugby fans well behaved

Crowds were generally well behaved for the first Super Rugby match of the season at Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin police say.

While Saturday night had the potential to be very busy, Southern District Command Centre deployment co ordinator Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Temple said it was like any other Saturday night, with just five arrests for disorderly behaviour in the city - two of which were at the rugby.

''Jobs wise, it was reasonably steady, but they didn't result in many arrests.

''Crowds at the rugby and in bars were generally well behaved.''

However, Friday night was a different story.

Couch, scrub and forest fires kept Dunedin firefighters busy throughout the night.

Firefighters from Willowbank Fire Station were called to extinguish a couch burning in Chambers St, Northeast Valley, about 11pm, a New Zealand Fire Service southern communications spokeswoman said.

Firefighters from Dunedin Central fire station were called to extinguish a couch fire on the corner of Harrow and Vire Sts, in Central Dunedin, about 12.30am on Saturday.

Both fires took about 10 minutes to put out, she said.

Firefighters from Roslyn Fire Station were called to a 30sq m forest fire in Three Mile Hill Rd, North Taieri, about 10pm on Friday.

The fire was not being treated as suspicious and police were called for traffic control while firefighters battled the blaze, she said.

Firefighters from St Kilda Fire Station were called to a 20sq m scrub fire in John Wilson Ocean Dr, near Chisholm Park Golf Course, about 1am on Saturday, she said. The fire took more than an hour to extinguish, she said. It was not being treated as suspicious and police were not called.
