Crime sprees may be work of many

Police believe multiple burglars may be operating in Dunedin's southern suburbs, after two sprees of dishonesty offending there in as many weekends.

There were four burglaries on Sunday night, Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said.

Two commercial premises in Forbury Rd were targeted in raids during which padlocks were cut to access a container and a chiller.

It did not appear anything was taken during the raids, he said.

Two residential burglaries also occurred on the same night. Electronics and jewellery were taken from a Thorn St property and a watering can was taken from a Hargest Cres address.

''There may be separate offenders,'' Snr Sgt Butterfield said.

''There's a good chance someone out there knows something about who's responsible, so we are asking them to do the right thing and contact us ... because with the help of the community, we can definitely solve this.''

Police were keeping an open mind on whether any of the crimes were linked to a spree of seven burglaries and thefts in Caversham, Corstorphine, South Dunedin and St Clair between August 11 and 13.

''It's something we are looking into,'' Snr Sgt Butterfield said.

''That ... is a concern to us.''

Police had increased patrols in the area.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
