Protest against closure of centre

Save our centre. That will be the cry of protesters today in the Octagon against the possible closure of a Dunedin activity centre, Advisory and Support Centre Otago (Asco).

Between 10am and 1pm today, Asco members and centre supporters will make clear their opposition to the prospect of losing the centre.

It was hoped the wider community would attend too, centre manager Bruce McCormick said.

Asco has warned it may have to close, after losing Southern District Health Board (SDHB) funding of about $145,000 and Ministry of Social Development funding of about $90,000, effective in June.

Asco is a daily activity centre in Stafford St providing a meal, and a host of activities, to 50 to 60 members every weekday, with a total of 180 members on its books.

In a letter to the Southern District Health Board (SDHB) last week, Mr McCormick urged the board to extend funding by three months to allow time to find alternative services for members.

Asco was concerned by the DHB's assertion in the media that members could access other services, which was not necessarily the case.

"It appears that our members are to be dumped into the community with no regard for what they require or need or any support for the NGO organisations that you expect to pick them up."

Asco deputy chairman Graham Hambleton told the Otago Daily Times talks yesterday with the board's planning and funding division had been positive.

The most crucial thing was that every member had organised somewhere to go once the centre shut, he said.

SDHB planning and funding general manager David Chrisp said he could not comment on contract matters between Asco and the DHB.
