Photo: supplied A group of young Dunedin musicians who perform together as Tui Quartet will host a musical fundraising event for the Red Cross Syrian Refugee Appeal today. The event, which will also incorporate an art auction, will be held at the Sargood Centre, 40 Logan Park Dr, from 4pm to 6pm on Sunday April 9. Entry is by gold coin donation. Tui Quartet is a performance outlet for fifth-year medical student Maple Goh (second violin), second-year medical student Anne Kim (first violin), fourth-year dentistry student Peter Lee (cello), and Rosalind Manowitz (viola). All four musicians are past or present players with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, and Goh was the former concert master of the Dunedin Youth Orchestra. Goh told The Star the performance and art auction event would aim to raise money to support the settlement of former Syrian refugees in New Zealand, and also to send aid to Syria in support of the White Helmets, a volunteer civil defence organisation in Syria. Dunedin artists had also stepped up to contribute a collection of art work inspired by the refugee crisis, which would be sold in a silent auction on Sunday. ‘‘We are thrilled by the amount of support we have had for this project. It’s going to be great to see all the art work together on Sunday,’’ Goh said. The quartet will play for two hours, while visitors browse the works, presenting a mix of classical and pop music. Alongside repertoire such as Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusic and Divertimento, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, the performance will also feature the theme from Game of Thrones, and popular songs. The event will also include talks by secretary of the National Refugee Youth Council Pyo Chan, former refugee Noella Dushime, and Dunedinite Fardowsa Abdullahi Mohamed, whose family came to Dunedin as refugees. ‘‘We are hoping for a good turnout of Dunedin people to support us and this worthy cause,’’ Goh said. |
