Live coverage of the national remembrance service being held in Christchurch on Friday will be shown in Dunedin.

An event will be held in the Dunedin Town Hall from 9.30am and the remembrance service will be shown on live on big screens between 10am and 11am.

As well as a big screen inside the town hall, there will be a screen in Harrop St if there is not enough room inside.

The event will also include speeches from Minister of Health Dr David Clark, Otago Muslim Association chairman Mohammed Rizwan, Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull, Otago Regional Council chairman Stephen Woodhead and Dunedin South MP Clare Curran.

Mr Cull said it was an opportunity for Dunedin to  join hands "with our whanau in Christchurch and indeed throughout the country'' to honour the 50 victims of the mosque attacks.

The event will close with a karakia about 11.30am.

Both Arabic and New Zealand sign language interpreters will support the event.

There will be a significant police presence, and people going to the town hall, the library and around the library plaza and Civic Centre can expect to have their bags checked at these venues.

The Dunedin City Council has advised people to leave bags at home if possible.
