Work to repair a damaged ford across a Dunedin creek in which a tramper was swept to his death last year, should be completed by June, the Dunedin City Council says.
The Southern Region Coroner recommended the council repair the crumbling edge of the ford and erect signs warning users that the creek could rise and fall quickly after rain, at a hearing as part of the inquest in to Trevor Mason's death.
Mr Mason (47) died when his tramping party of four was swept off the Whare Creek ford, near Dunedin, while crossing it on February 16, 2008.
The creek was dirty and flowing swiftly at about 50cm deep over the ford when the group of experienced trampers linked arms and attempted to cross.
The other three men managed to swim to safety after the group was swept off the ford when one of them lost their footing.
Council transportation operations manager Graeme Hamilton said the rock work required to repair the ford was planned for this week with concrete work to be finished by June.
He was not aware any signs were to be erected.
