Residents fed up with power cuts

Greater Green Island residents have had enough of power cuts in the area and want to know why it keeps happening.

Power was cut to more than 4000 customers between noon and 3.30pm on Monday after a tree fell on a line, and about 1600 customers lost power about 6pm after a ‘‘backfeed'' issue.

Business owners spoken to by the Otago Daily Times on Monday expressed concerns about the frequency of power cuts in the area.

Some residents took to the ODT Facebook page to express concern.

Matthew Gurney posted: ‘‘Been living in Dunedin for three months and there have been four power cuts. Is this the norm?''

Michelle McVie posted: ‘‘Seems we are without power quite a lot in Green Island and surrounding suburbs at the moment. Refund?''

Anthony McKenzie posted: ‘‘What's the go with the power?''

In a statement, Delta general manager asset management Derek Todd said he recognised the inconvenience to customers.

Four recent power cuts were either caused by severe weather or third party contractors, he said.

‘‘[We] thank everyone for their patience as we worked to restore power,'' Mr Todd said.

Linesfrom Aurora Energy's Green Island substation affect customers in Burnside, Caversham, Concord, Abbotsford, Green Island, Sunnyvale, Fairfield, Waldronville and Ocean View, he said.

A Wenita logging contractor working between Abbot's Hill and the Southern Reservoir caused Monday's cut.

‘‘Before the felling operation started, Delta met with representatives of Wenita and the logging contractor to alert them to the risks of working near power lines.

‘‘Following [Monday's] damage, Wenita and its logging contractor have reassessed their approach to felling the trees ... closest to the line,'' Mr Todd said.

A power cut that affected about 4000 Green Island residents on March 10 was caused by severe wind, and on January 21 two ‘‘brief planned outages'' affected about 4000 customers after a tree fell on lines, he said.

In a statement, a WorkSafe New Zealand spokesman said it had been notified about the incident involving a tree falling on to a line on Monday and ‘‘preliminary inquiries'' were being made.
