Retailer threatened by armed man

A St Kilda shopkeeper was shaken but uninjured after an attempted aggravated robbery on Saturday night, Detective Sergeant Rob Hanna said.

The offender was armed with a weapon when he entered the 10 O'Clock Dairy in Prince Albert Rd about 8.45pm.

He threatened the shopkeeper before leaving empty handed, Det Sgt Hanna said. An in store video clip of the incident was released by police yesterday and can be viewed at www.odt.co.nz.

The man was described as about 180cm tall and of solid build. He had a blue scarf on his face, and a grey jacket with the hood over his head. His blue jeans were faded around the knees and he wore dark shoes with white soles.

• Charges were likely to be laid against an 18 year old man who evaded a police pursuit yesterday morning and was apprehended later, Acting Senior Sergeant Geoff Sutherland said. Police abandoned the short chase of a Subaru WRX on the Southern Motorway near Caversham about 3.30am.

A short time later they found the Subaru in Rutherford St, where it had crashed into a taxi.

The driver and passenger escaped on foot but were found by police later and the driver was arrested.
