MetService meteorologist Tom Adams said several factors needed to align to get the perfect sunrise.
"You want cloud in the sky but not obscuring the sun, so if it's a sun rise you want, you want cloud in the west."
This meant there was some truth to the adage "red sky at morning, shepherd's warning", as weather often travelled from the west in New Zealand.
"Also, you want a range of different clouds at different heights, because that means you get those different colours."
