Robbers attack Dunedin student in street

Police are appealing for witnesses to an attempted aggravated robbery of a pedestrian in central Dunedin.

Senior Sergeant Chris George, of Dunedin, said a 25-year-old male University of Otago student was walking past the University of Otago School of Dentistry from Frederick St to Great King St, towards the Captain Cook Tavern, just before 11pm on Tuesday when he was approached by two men.

The men demanded the student give them money and his laptop computer before they grabbed him and pushed him to the ground.

He was then kicked and punched, Snr Sgt George said.

The assailants were described as male caucasians in their early 20s.

One attacker was described as being of skinny to medium build, about 170cm tall, with brown hair, and wearing a grey long-sleeved top.

The other man was about 165cm tall, and was also of slim to medium build.

"Although nothing was taken, we are treating this as a serious incident as it involves assault and attempted aggravated robbery.

"We are aware there were people in the area, and given the timing and busy pubs . . . we believe there would have been witnesses or people who could help with inquiries," Snr Sgt George said.
