The council has been reviewing its keeping of animals (excluding dogs) and birds bylaw, and at its Tuesday meeting voted to approve a draft bylaw and put it out for further public consultation.
The new rules would ban roosters from being kept at any property zoned residential unless the owner had written permission from the council to own a banned bird.
A survey of the Dunedin residents was taken during the drafting process, and found general support for a ban.
Forty-nine percent of respondents supported a ban like the one proposed in the draft bylaw, and a further 16% supported an unconditional ban on roosters.
The initial call for public feedback on the proposed bylaw also asked for people’s opinions on bees.
The new rules do not have any provisions specific for bees, current rules deemed sufficient to deal with any nuisances caused by bees.
The council will run a consultation process on the proposed bylaw in October and November, the final proposed bylaw to go to a vote in early 2022.
