Rugby: It may not be that easy being green

Is it going to an Edsel? Or will it be a Mustang?

The Highlanders moving to a new jersey is in some ways the classic chicken and egg argument.

The team is winning so why change.

But a new jersey is needed to continue the impetus of change which brought about the winning.

People in the Highlanders organisation are committed to change and see this new jersey as part of the process.

We can swallow a new stadium, new offices and importing players from all over the country.

But can we see a new light green jersey as the symbol of the Highlanders?

The blue, gold and maroon of the Highlanders is forever gone to the rugby cemetery to sit beside white laces and three point tries.

This new green kit reeks of marketing and the "brand."

But ultimately, winning games matters more than what you wear.

Being victorious is more important, way more important, than what a team looks like.

If the Highlanders went out next year and wore pink jerseys with pictures of orange elephants on the front and back and won every game would anyone care?

Just go out and win. Who cares what you look like.

It is not the wisest move, especially when it appears to be brassing off your most loyal fans, but this is professional sport, where money talks.

Actually, it does more than talk, it yells.

The Highlanders have not been making enough money. They need to make more. They see getting another jersey as a way to get fans back.

Or, more importantly, new fans interested.

Will it? Hard to see it.

How about playing in warmer temperatures during the day, blacking out television coverage locally, and playing games against teams with some stars?

And wiping the past seven years from fans' memories.

That wearing green will somehow gain the support of a teenager in Milton is a stretch. A long stretch.

This is not 1995, society has moved on. Rugby does not, for whatever reason, hold the sway it once did.

More people can name the last three contestants in Masterchef than the Highlanders back three.

And of all the colours, why did green have to be top of the list?

Who else wears green? Not many.

The Green Bay Packers. The mighty green machine in Canberra, Hibs in Scotland.

Celtic wears green and white hoops in Scottish football. The Irish.

Portugal in football. Manawatu in rugby. The Springboks, of course.

At least there should be no need for an away strip for the Highlanders. There is not going to be any clash with other Super 15 sides simply because there are not any grinch-coloured teams waltzing around in the competition.

But of course there will be an away strip. Chance for them to sell a few more shirts.

And of course, make some money. This is professional sport.

Money and the balance sheet are as important as the wins column.
