Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive Richard Reid confirmed termination of contract was an option for the New Zealand and Otago unions, and said he was hugely disappointed another player had appeared in court.
Mulipola (26) was charged with assault with intent to injure Majdi Ghanem Mohammed Abed-Rabbo on May 22 in Dunedin.
He pleaded not guilty in the Dunedin District Court yesterday and was refused continued name suppression by Judge Geoff Rea, of Napier.
Mulipola was remanded to appear at a status hearing on August 24.
"I'm sick of these sort of things happening. The public are sick of it and it is just not right that these incidents are happening," Mr Reid said.
"Clearly, we have been aware of the incident for some time but haven't been able to make any public comment."
The Highlanders had their awards night on May 21.
Mr Reid said the New Zealand Rugby Union would be considering a variety of options. That could include termination of contract, but no decision had yet been made. The union may have to wait until the case concludes. As Mulipola is a Super 14 player, he is employed by the New Zealand Rugby Union.
He is in the Otago squad for the upcoming domestic provincial competition, and scored a try for his Southern club in the Dunedin club-rugby final last Saturday.
Mulipola had a disappointing season for the Highlanders, however, making just one appearance off the bench.
