Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and Elmer the Patchwork Elephant were among about 300 characters to descend on Tainui School yesterday.

The conventional and not so conventional characters donned colourful costumes as part of a school council-led book day.

Squeals of excitement echoed across the school’s court as the pupils aged 5 to 11 paraded by class in front of other pupils and staff.

Pupil Melody Buskby (9), said the student council started in March and yesterday’s event was the second members had organised. They also hosted an Anzac Day service.

Melody confessed her Goldilocks costume had been put together ‘‘at the last minute’’ but she was excited the day of the event had arrived.

During the day a love for books was also celebrated in a teacher swap, where teachers read their favourite book to different classrooms, and a book swap event where pupils traded books.

Council member Hew Bishkin (11) said he was pleased that  pupils had accepted the challenge of dressing up.

Principal Shelley Wilde, dressed as a bumble bee, said the event had been a ‘‘huge success’’.

The school council’s next project would be planning and funding a friendship seat, she said.
