School window smashing frenzy

Vandals who smashed dozens of windows at two South Dunedin schools during the weekend are the target of a police investigation.

In total, 56 windows were smashed in a Friday night frenzy at King's High School in Bay View Rd and Macandrew Intermediate in Macandrew Rd.

A caretaker from King's High School confirmed the damage to both schools, and said it was "quite bad".

Glazier Tony Smither, from Dunedin Glass, said he spent the weekend replacing 32 windows at Macandrew Intermediate and 16 windows at King's, but still had eight more windows to do today at that school.

Many of the windows, some of them reinforced, were "smashed to smithereens", he said.

"It looks like they've taken to them with a baseball bat or something like that. There was definitely a bit of force used."

Police said an officer from the South Dunedin station was investigating, but he was not available yesterday and the Otago Daily Times was unable to confirm if there were any leads or if there was any other damage to windows in the area.
