Seminar to help preserve jewelled geckos

Poaching, management and the tracking of jewelled geckos are some of the topics to be discussed at a workshop being held tomorrow.

The annual half-day seminar is a chance for the Department of Conservation, members of the community and researchers to get together and share information about the rare gecko, Doc community relations ranger Liz Sherwood said.

The aim of the seminar, at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre at Portobello, was to find practical ways to curb any population decline of the species.

Practical advice for predator control would be given by Doc.

Jewelled geckos were recently in the headlines after three overseas men were prosecuted for trying to smuggle geckos from the Otago Peninsula.

The work of University of Otago student Carey Knox enabled the geckos to be returned to the peninsula and the results of his population research would be presented at the seminar.
