Spike is never happier than when he is in the dog box.

The 2-year-old fox terrier-poodle cross and owner Ken Uren stop traffic wherever they go on their Moto Guzzi motorcycle.

The Otago Daily Times followed the duo through Dunedin yesterday as they left smiling motorists and pedestrians in their wake.

Spike almost appeared to be grinning, his ears flapping in the wind, as they cruised along.

"He's named after Spike Milligan, because he's such a character," Mr Uren said.

"He loves it on the bike. We're heading up to Queenstown for a wee trip.

"We usually stop off by a river somewhere along the way, so he can have a toilet break and a bit of a rest."

Mr Uren made the carrier for his sidekick, complete with Moto Guzzi emblems.

"He's ridden thousands of kilometres around the country in it, including a couple of trips around the South Island.

"People take photographs of him wherever we go.

"There must be photos of him all over the world," Mr Uren said.
