Phoebe Aburn (19), of the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, dashes for the ocean at the start of a paddleboard race at Dunedin’s St Clair Beach on Saturday morning.

St Clair Surf Life Saving Club chairman Cameron Burrows said the race was a part of a "fun" competition organised to end the season on a positive note.

It follows Surf Life Saving New Zealand having to cancel its national championships, due to be held last week, due to Covid-19 alert level uncertainty.

"Obviously there were quite a few disappointed people with the nationals being cancelled, so it was all about just doing something fun to end the season on a good note, rather than a negative note," Mr Burrows said.

About 50 people, aged 10 to 57 and from across all off Dunedin’s surf clubs, took part in a range of surf life-saving events including 3km beach runs and board races.

"It was a beautiful day," he said.

Volunteer patrols at Dunedin beaches ended yesterday.
