The steps on Golf Course Track at Ross Creek were installed in December and attracted comment about being awkward to descend.
The Dunedin City Council said yesterday adjustments would be made.
"We’ve checked the steps and they were not quite up to specification, but we’ve also identified other improvements that could be made," a council spokesman said.
"We’re working with the contractor to remedy this."
Andy Leitch was one person who observed the configuration resulted in people needing to use a sideways or heel-reliant technique on the tread to descend.
All other work in the area had been done well, he said.
Cathy Weatherston said the steps were dangerous.
"The steps have been overlaid, meaning on the way down they are only wide enough to fit your heel," she said.
"On the way up, the overhanging step is a trip hazard."
She would also like to see changes to make the entrance to Fraser’s Gully more accessible.
A "mind the step" sign was placed at the top of the Golf Course Track set of steps.
The council spokesman said the cost of extra work was expected to be minor and it would be shared between the council and the contractor.
