'Steve Irwin' may visit Dunedin

Anti-whaling ship Steve Irwin, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's flagship, may visit Dunedin next month to refuel and pick up supplies for its campaign in the Antarctic.

The ship left Australia yesterday for a three-month trip to the Antarctic after a fleet of eight Japanese whaling boats.

The ship is run by volunteers and the crew relies on donations for food.

Crew members also need supplies for a vegan diet.

Dunedin woman Olive McRae said she would be trying to get a supply of donated dry goods and fresh produce together to help restock the ship when it arrived.

The aim of Steve Irwin's trip was to shut down the whaling fleet.
