Police say three men wanted over a stabbing in Tainui are believed to have links with South Otago.

A 32-year-old man was taken to Dunedin Hospital after being stabbed outside his Crest St home about 4am on Sunday.

Police were still looking for the three men, Detective Sergeant Chris Henderson said yesterday.

The victim was discharged from hospital yesterday following surgery for a single stab wound.

''He was very fortunate that he wasn't stabbed in areas that contain vital organs,'' Det Sgt Henderson said.

No weapons had been located and police were unsure what caused the wound, he said.

Police were yet to speak to the victim.

Two scene examinations were completed, at the Crest St address and at the Leviathan Hotel car park, where it was believed the assailants had been drinking earlier in the morning.

Police described the offenders as European males who were driving a dark-coloured vehicle, possibly a Toyota sedan, that was in rough condition.

One of the males had a shaved head, a tooth missing and tattoos on his arms.

The 32-year-old was confronted outside his home by the assailants, who were unknown to him, before being attacked.

Police would like to hear from anyone who recognised the description of the suspects or was in the area at the time of the stabbing and saw anything suspicious.

''We continue to ask for people who may have any information that can help us to come forward,'' Det Sgt Henderson said.

People can contact Dunedin police on 471-4800. Or information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
