An SUV was driven through a wooden wall and large sash window of a Dunedin gymnasium yesterday.

Emergency services were called to Arai Te Uru Whare Hauora in College St, Caversham, about 12.15pm.

A silver Honda CR-V crashed through a wall of the gym at the centre for health, education and social services.

A police spokesman said no-one was inside the gym at the time of the crash.

A St John spokesman said two "elderly" people sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

A tradesman working near the centre said a man and woman were in the SUV.

The woman was driving the SUV and accidentally put her foot on the accelerator and drove  into the gym.

There was  a "loud bang" on impact, he said. The SUV stopped next to the interior wall on the other side of the gym.
