Thief takes injured elderly woman's handbag

Police say the robbery of an 84-year-old woman who tripped and hurt herself at Mosgiel's Countdown supermarket yesterday was the "lowest" sort of crime.

Constable Brent Christie, of Dunedin, said the woman tripped on a concrete kerb in the supermarket's car park about 2.15pm.

She was taken to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department by ambulance.

She had several facial cuts treated.

She had a bad cut on her nose, and also bruising.

Hospital staff contacted police at 3pm yesterday to say someone had stolen the woman's handbag.

She had dropped the handbag as she fell.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the offending was "exceptionally low".

"Who would steal from an old lady when she was obviously unwell?"

Police would be grateful for any information about the incident, he said.
