A third youth has been arrested after an allegedly stolen car, spiked three times by police, was driven on its rims through Dunedin, sending sparks flying.

Sergeant Matt Lee said the boy was scheduled to appear in the Youth Court yesterday on a burglary charge.

Two teenagers — one pepper-sprayed and bitten by a police dog — had already appeared after being arrested on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s events unfolded when officers spotted the car, containing a group of youths, travelling south from Oamaru towards Dunedin, about 4.30am.

"It is alleged that the vehicle and the occupants have been involved in a burglary of a store in Palmerston," Sgt Lee said.

The Toyota Aqua was allegedly stolen from Invercargill and used earlier in a petrol drive-off in Oamaru.

It was also linked to offending in Timaru.

Sgt Lee yesterday confirmed a bag containing vaping products — allegedly taken in the Palmerston burglary — was thrown from the vehicle.

The car continued south towards Dunedin and was spiked by police on State Highway1 about 10km north of the city near Pigeon Flat.

The vehicle continued travelling at low speed towards Dunedin.

It was then spiked a further two times before it reached the Woodhaugh area.

Having continued to drive the car through Dunedin on its tyre-less rims, sparks flying, the youths ultimately abandoned the vehicle in Forbury Rd.
