Toddler in CYF care after being found with injury

A 14-month-old Dunedin boy will be placed in Child, Youth and Family care until it is determined how he received an injury that needed hospital treatment.

The toddler was taken to Dunedin Hospital on Wednesday evening with a bleeding nose that was described as an unexplained injury.

This followed police being called to an address on High St, City Rise, about 8.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Brett Roberts, of the Dunedin CIB, said a scene examination was conducted at the address yesterday and police staff made inquiries in the general area.

Police were waiting for a doctor's report clarifying the nature and cause of the child's injuries.

"Basically, we are not sure how the child came about his injuries and we need that medical information."

The child was still in hospital yesterday, but would be placed in CYF care while the investigation proceeded to determine if the injuries were accidental or not.

The full investigation of the case was still expected to take several days, Det Sgt Roberts said yesterday.
