Retiring Dunedin Botanic Garden manager Alan Matchett (centre) makes a final tour of the grounds with garden staff yesterday, sharing a few of the stories and a little of the knowledge he has accumulated in his more than 40 years’ working there.

During that time, Mr Matchett has been hands-on in the rhododendron dell, served as upper garden foreman and has, for the best part of the past three decades, overseen operations at the beloved Dunedin institution.

His tenure has been punctuated by a series of significant developments, from establishing the Mediterranean and South African gardens, to the new propagation facilities on Lovelock Ave and achieving six-star status from the New Zealand Gardens Trust.
