Tourist driver safety boost

More no-passing lanes, rumble strips and ''keep left'' arrows are among measures are on their way in the South, as further funding is provided to try to reduce the incidence crashes by overseas driver licence holders.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) yesterday announced it has made a further $25million investment into visitor driver safety.

The money will include $15million for road safety engineering on the state highway network in Otago, Southland and the West Coast, another $8.5million for co-investment with local government to support initiatives on local roads in the same regions, and $1million for a social marketing programme providing information to visitor drivers.

The funding, announced yesterday, would come from the agency's 2015-2018 national land transport programme, NZTA southern regional director Jim Harland said.

Mr Harland, also chairman of the visiting drivers project governance group, said the funding would be in addition to work already under way as part of the Government's visiting drivers project.

The programme of engineering works was likely to include rumble strips, improved rest areas, more ''keep left'' lane arrows, possible further no-passing lines, delineation improvements on moderate curves and shoulder widening.
