The trip on the Santa Express yesterday went from Dunedin to Hindon and back and is part of a broader trial of train services this summer.
Melissa Renwick was there with her family and said the event was run well and, when they stopped at Hindon, Santa’s helpers played tag with the children.
Families were encouraged to wear pyjamas, just like the characters from the film The Polar Express.
Korrina Renwick said Santa Claus gave her presents.
Makayla Wilson said Santa’s helpers danced in the aisle.
Jocelyn Edge-Bryan enjoyed going through the tunnels.
Bruce Berryman was along for the ride, too, and he said it was a good way to get children away from their mobile phones and to appreciate the scenery.
He was also pleased that the assets of Dunedin Railways had been pressed back into service.
"It’s marvellous to have this up and running again," Mr Berryman said.
Dunedin Railways Ltd went into hibernation this year after the border closure brought about by Covid-19.
A weekly trip to Hindon is part of a trial of train services until the end of March. The aim is to see if a domestic market can be established.
Dunedin Venues Management Ltd is running the "Trains, Not Planes" promotion.
The trial also features The Seasider train, which will offer views of Otago Harbour, starting next Sunday.
