In this cynical age, romantics Geoff and Helen Hinds remain firm believers in love at first sight - or at least the possibility of a strong attraction.

The couple yesterday returned to the Dunedin South Presbyterian Church 60 years to the day after they married there, and then visited the hall (now part of the Otago Settlers Museum) were they first met.

Mr Hinds distinctly remembers arriving at the Wembley dance and immediately spotting his future wife in the crowd.

"It was one of those strange things. I walked in with a mate, and just like that saw this lady over the other side of the hall and that was it. I had to ask for a dance."

And his interest was reciprocated.

Mrs Hinds remembers thinking: "He's for me."

"It was my first dance ever, and I think I giggled all the way round the floor," she said.

Mr Hinds enjoyed a quick step, and she had favourites like the Lamberth Walk, but both said the Saturday night dances around Dunedin were the most popular form of entertainment for young people, and led to marriage for many people they knew.

They lived in the Dunedin suburb of Waverley, and for more than 40 years they were in a home built by Mr Hinds.

"The road was just a track, and there were no buses, or sewerage," he said.

After raising a family - three boys and a daughter - the couple retired to Mosgiel, a town they say is well suited to the elderly.

Mr Hinds built state houses "in his younger days", residential property and, later, commercial buildings around Dunedin.

Mrs Hinds worked at Miss Martin's Hat Shop and later Pattons Wool Shop in South Dunedin.

They both agree while a "bolt from the blue" may have got them together, the success of their long marriage has been the ability to communicate.
