Trolley derby off the rails as entries collapse

The annual Dunedin Trolley Derby has hit the skids.

Only a dozen entries had been received for the March 22 event, forcing organisers to cancel this year's competition.

''Up until this year, it has gone well. We have always had a good turnout,'' trolley derby convener Trevor Payton said yesterday.

''It is like a bombshell for us.''

Last year, the event's future looked assured with more than 40 entries, ''but [the number of] this year's entries has stumped us ... we were expecting a bigger turnout than ever''.

This year the trolley derby was shifted back a couple of weeks to avoid a clash with other events.

Cancellation of the trolley derby, organised by the Dunedin North Rotary Club, was likely to force a rethink about its future, as ''in our wildest dreams, we never thought of cancelling it''.

''We are looking very seriously at running it again, but under a new guise,'' Mr Payton said.

''But we feel rotten because there are one or two kids who have got busy and made trolleys ... but there's just not enough of them.''
