Turbine towers on move

The first big components for TrustPower's Mahinerangi wind farm are due to be transported to the site above the Waipori hydro-electric power scheme this morning.

The first tower sections, which are up to 30m long, are to leave Port Chalmers at 4am, each straddling two trailers pulled by one of three trucks in a convoy including seven pilot vehicles.

The slow-moving convoy - it will travel at less than 60kmh - will travel through the main street of Mosgiel about 5am before taking SH87 through Outram and turning on to Mahinerangi Rd at 7am.

The remaining towers would be delivered in three sections and in three truck movements a day until about January 20, TrustPower spokeswoman Pip Tschudin said yesterday. There are 12 turbines, the components of which will be delivered in 96 loads, with the last load to be delivered by February 28.

The 36MW first stage of the up-to-200MW wind farm was expected to be fully commissioned by May, after which electricity will be fed to the Halfway Bush substation at Dunedin.
