By the time the Carisbrook School board of trustees has spent every last cent of the $5.6 million it has received to redevelop the former Caversham School site, few people will recognise it, principal Ben Sincock says.

The board and the Ministry of Education revealed plans for the development yesterday.

Mr Sincock said stage one would begin next month with the construction of a new six-classroom junior block, complete with a large learning space.

The facility would be situated on the courts, on the north side of the two-storeyed Nelson block, which would also be refurbished as part of stage one.

Mr Sincock said construction would be completed in time for the start of school next year and would provide enough space to accommodate the 150 pupils from the former College Street School on site.

At that time, the former College Street School would be closed, he said.

Stage two was expected to begin at the start of next year in which the school's two other two-storeyed Nelson blocks would be redeveloped.

Six new learning areas, a new technology centre and a performing arts area would also be established as part of the second stage, he said.

It was hoped the development would be completed by the end of next year.

"By the time they're finished, you won't recognise the old school.

"Things are really motoring along now. It's really exciting.

"We're going to have such an ultramodern learning environment. It will be the newest school in the city."
