Icy conditions in Dunedin kept emergency services busy yesterday morning, and a wayward cow resulted in a truck driver being flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.

A truck laden with groceries rolled on State Highway 93 at 3.30am, between Clinton and Mataura.

The 30-year-old driver was cut from his cab by the Fire Service. He was flown to hospital with serious injuries to his leg.

Grocery items were strewn over the road, which was closed to traffic for most of the morning. It reopened at noon.

A cow on the road was believed to be the cause of the incident.

At 6.15am, emergency services attended a car crash on Taieri Rd.

The car had rolled on its side and into a fence.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said the icy conditions were believed to have been a major factor.

The female driver, who was cut from the vehicle, was taken to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries.

A combination of ice and alcohol was a major factor in a crash on Dalziel Rd, Halfway Bush shortly before 7am.

The 23-year-old driver of the car was processed for drink-driving, recording a breath alcohol reading of 558mcg. The legal limit is 400mcg.

Another occupant of the vehicle fled the scene, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

In an other drink-driving incident, a 22-year-old driver was stopped by a patrol car on Duke St.

He recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 671mcg.

The man is expected to appear in Dunedin District Court on Tuesday.
