Victim bitten by dog in car

The young woman bitten by a dog in Dunedin on Tuesday night received her injuries after getting into the car in which the dog, and its owner, were sitting, police said.

Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said last night the 21-year-old woman was discharged from Dunedin Hospital yesterday following surgery to repair eyelid and tear duct injuries.

After speaking to the victim yesterday, police understood she had been walking on the footpath in the Castle St-Duke St area at 9.50pm when she saw the German shepherd sitting in the back of a vehicle.

She opened the car door and climbed in to give the dog a "cuddle".

A witness told police the dog had growled at the woman and bit her when it was not released.

Snr Sgt Aitken said police inquiries were continuing and it was not known if any charges would be laid.

The incident would be reported to animal control today.
