Warm, dry New Year predicted

The wildly fluctuating weather affecting much of Otago and Southland over the past two weeks appears to be stabilising and MetService has tentatively forecast a warm, dry start to the new year for most of the regions.

But MetService meteorologist Juliane Bergdolt said as with all weather forecasts there were caveats.

Showers and thunderstorms were expected to continue around the southern regions today, but clear for most places tomorrow and Thursday.

"After the showers and thunder storms that we are expecting over the next couple of days, we’re looking forward to a little bit more settled weather from December 27."

Temperatures are expected to reach 30°C in Central Otago on Thursday and 29°C of Friday, before another front bringing showers and rain spreads across the south over the weekend.

At this stage, the weather forecast for New Year’s Day looks to be warm and dry across Otago, with temperatures reaching 25°C in Alexandra and Wanaka.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Invercargill and Gore, which can expect more showers and temperatures in the high teens.

However, that forecast was not yet "a given", she said.

"On New Year’s Day, we have a front coming in from the west, bringing some rain to Southland, and then moving into Otago in the evening.

"This is still a few days out, so the timings of its effects might change a little bit over the next few days."

It would be best to keep a close eye on the forecast nearer the time before planning any big outdoor events, she said.
